Toronto imam reported alleged terror plot to police

LA Times   An imam in the Toronto area came forward more than a year ago with concerns about one of the two suspects now charged with an alleged terrorism plot, an attorney who handled the tip said Tuesday. Toronto attorney Naseer Syed said the imam, who wants to remain anonymous, first came to him with his concerns about Raed Jaser, 35, who was arrested Monday by Canadian police.

“The community has always struggled with, at what point does some behavior or activity or words cross a certain threshold?” Syed said in a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times. “He noticed some of the activities and became concerned enough that he consulted with me and felt it should be reported to authorities. … He asked me to make the first call,” the attorney said.

Syed said he immediately contacted Canadian authorities with the tip. It is unclear what part the information played in the lengthy investigation that led up to the arrests of Jaser and Montreal-area resident Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, who were charged with conspiring to commit murder in connection with a terrorist group. Canadian police told reporters their investigation began last August.

    1. Here's another factoid for you, Female Rabbi. Just like looking at what one, or many, Jew(s) do, doesn't mean that's what Judaism is. If I see a Jew eating treif, does that mean he's following the Torah?

How many murders, acts of violence or terror have had Islam as the motive?

    2. "There is no moderate Islam. There are Muslims who are passive, who don’t all follow the rules of Islam, but there’s really only one Islam, defined as submission to the will of God. There’s nothing moderate about it."

  2. Yes, there are moderate imams. A google search brings up many references such as this from March:
Cairo (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Hundreds of moderate imams are protesting against the hegemony of the Muslim Brotherhood and the hegemony of Islamic mosques. The protest has been going on since yesterday in front of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Ministry of donations). They accuse the Minister Talaat Afify of wanting to control the words and behavior of the imams, punishing and marginalizing those who deviate from purely Islamist thought.

  3. Yes, there probably are moderate imams. However, the predominance of extremist (in our terms) imams and the power they wield is frightening. Understand that due to the same moderateness that characterizes the moderate imams, they will not viciously attack extremist imams. Whereas the extremists have no problem dealing extremely with imams and other Moslems who oppose them.
So what are the lessons that we need to learn in order to deal with the threat of Jihadist Islam? And how can we influence the average Moslem to join the moderate stream? Or should we? After all, they have a right to choose, and how can a Jew dictate what a Moslem should be?

  4. Waxman, and all you bleeding heart leftist liberals, can't you get it through your heads, nobody claims that all Muslim's are terrorists, but the undeniable fact is,that 99% of terrorist acts perpetrated around the world for the last 30 years, have been perpetrated by muslims.
is this so hard to understand?,or you just don't want to be confused by facts.

"Mosque that Boston suspects attended has radical ties

    Apr 24, 2013

BOSTON - The mosque attended by the two brothers accused in the Boston Marathon double bombing has been associated with other terrorism suspects, has invited radical speakers to a sister mosque in Boston and is affiliated with a Muslim group that critics say nurses grievances that can lead to extremism.

Several people who attended the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Cambridge, Mass., have been investigated for Islamic terrorism, including a conviction of the mosque's first president, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, in connection with an assassination plot against a Saudi prince.

Its sister mosque in Boston, known as the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, has invited guests who have defended terrorism suspects. A former trustee appears in a series of videos in which he advocates treating gays as criminals, says husbands should sometimes beat their wives and calls on Allah (God) to kill Zionists and Jews, according to Americans for Peace and Tolerance, an interfaith group that has investigated the mosques.

The head of the group is among critics who say the two mosques teach a brand of Islamic thought that encourages grievances against the West, distrust of law enforcement and opposition to Western forms of government, dress and social values.

"We don't know where these boys were radicalized, but this mosque has a curriculum that radicalizes people. Other people have been radicalized there," said the head of the group, Charles Jacobs.

Yusufi Vali, executive director at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, insists his mosque does not spread radical ideology and cannot be blamed for the acts of a few worshipers.

"If there were really any worry about us being extreme," Vali said, U.S. law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and Departments of Justice and Homeland Security would not partner with the Muslim American Society and the Boston mosque in conducting monthly meetings that have been ongoing for four years, he said, in an apparent reference to U.S. government outreach programs in the Muslim community.

The Cambridge and Boston mosques, separated by the Charles River, are owned by the same entity but managed individually. The imam of the Cambridge mosque, Sheik Basyouny Nehela, is on the board of directors of the Boston mosque.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, attended the Cambridge mosque for services and are accused of setting two bombs that killed three people and injured at least 264 others at the April 15 Boston Marathon.

The FBI has not indicated that either mosque was involved in any criminal activity, but mosque attendees and officials have been implicated in terrorist activity:..."

  6. This is a huge change in their community. Not so many years ago they had "no snitch" attitudes that made us look lenient.

  7. Ahhh, but then there are mosques like that used by the Boston bombers:
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/04/23/boston-mosque-radicals/2101411/

Where they not only support jihad, but they actively engage in "taqiya" to cover their tracks and try to convince Americans that Islam is peaceful (even though they personally don't subscribe to a peaceful version of it). Straight out of the playbook of the Moslem brotherhood (and affiliate, CAIR!).
